Our Namesake

The origin of the term “ship shape” goes back to the time of clipper ships. It refers to the importance of checking every major piece of nautical equipment for cleanliness, proper placement, and perfect working condition. Many of these items, like the ship’s compass, helm, cleats, pulleys, winches, navigation lights, and bells and whistles, are essential to the safety and operation of the vessel.

With the widespread use of metal, these shiny object collectively became known as “brightworks.” Although sometimes taken for granted, when put to the test by a fierce storm, they quickly regain their significance.
