Howard J. Peterson, MHA, Partner.

Mr. Peterson has more than 25 years of healthcare experience, which he has spent developing progressive strategic, financial and operational solutions for a broad range of healthcare clients. His consulting expertise spans all of Brightworks service lines, including strategic positioning, critical performance improvement, strategic capital partnerships and strategic transactions. Within each of these four areas, he has worked extensively with community hospitals, academic medical centers, ambulatory care provides, and physician group practices.

Prior to forming Brigthworks Management, Mr. Peterson served as President of Founders Healthcare, Inc., a for-profit physician organization affiliated with the Graduate Health System in Pennsylvania. He also served for 15 years as a hospital executive, including seven years at Penn State’s Hershey Medical Center, where he served as CEO, and eight years at the University of Michigan Medical Center, where he served in various capacities including COO. Mr. Peterson’s educational background includes a Masters Degree in Hospital and Health Care Administration and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business, Public Health and Sociology all from the University of Minnesota.

Joseph M. Huber, CPA, Partner.

Mr. Huber has more than 25 years of experience in healthcare financial management and accounting. He brings significant technical financial knowledge to his clients in addition to possessing a senior level perspective on financial planning and strategy in healthcare organizations. Mr. Huber’s consulting work focuses on developing financial strategies related to mergers and acquisitions, evaluating the impact of clinical service line development or expansion, and establishing targets for performance improvement. His experience also includes faculty compensation plan development, faculty practice and medical school operational improvement, and the structuring and administration of managed care contracts. Mr. Huber is an expert in revenue enhancement and leads the firm’s revenue enhancement activities, developing strategies and implementing mechanisms for healthcare organizations to realize revenue enhancement opportunities, while improving cash flow.

Prior to joining Brightworks, Mr. Huber served as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the Graduate Health System, Senior Financial Officer for Mediq Consulting Services, Inc., Co-Founder and Principal for Delaney Associates/Huber & Tierney CPA’s, and in the healthcare consulting department for Ernst & Young. In addition, he has worked as an independent consultant focusing on financial planning, reimbursement and bankruptcy. Mr. Huber’s is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. His educational background includes a Master of Science Degree in Taxation from Widener University and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from LaSalle University.

David J. Campbell, FACHE, Partner.

Mr. Campbell has more than 25 years in the leadership and management of hospitals and health systems. He has extensive operational experience and expertise in multiple healthcare settings that includes an established record of leading teaching institutions experiencing severe financial stress through significant organizational change. His leadership also includes the development and implementation of programs to create a service oriented, proactive culture in financially challenged institutions with a history of difficult labor relations.

Mr. Campbell has a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University and a Master in Hospital Administration from the University of Michigan. Mr. Campbell has a number of professional affiliations including serving as a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Phillip S. Schaengold, J.D., Partner.

Mr. Schaengold has more than 30 years of experience in healthcare management. He has extensive operations experience with responsibility for leading multiple hospitals at one time. He has overseen strategic planning and performance improvement activities, led financial turnarounds, expanded hospital networks, developed joint ventures with competing health systems, and has overseen the planning and financing of new hospitals, ambulatory care facilities and medical office campuses.

Mr. Schaengold is currently serving as Chief Excecutive Officer of SUNY Upstate Medical University Hospital in Syracuse, New York. Previously, he served as Regional Vice President for Tenet Health System in Philadelphia, PA. he is on numerous Boards and has delivered speeches across the country on such topics as “Strengthening Academic Enterprise” and “Trends in Health Care and the Role of Corporate Partnerships.” He has a Juris Doctor degree from Northern Kentucky University, a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, both from the University of Cincinatti.

Mark Durishan, MBA, Principal.

Mr. Durishan has more than 25 years of experience in the finance and healthcare industries. He specializes in reorganizing financial services in order to improve performance, and is known for his understanding of operational requirements in building financial systems. Mr. Durishan has spearheaded many strategic planning and information planning development engagements using broad leadership capabilities.

In addition to his work with Brightworks, Mr. Durishan is also President of a financial advisory firm in the southern United States. Prior to becoming an advisor and consultant, Mr. Durishan served as CFO for various organizations around the country, including Graduate Health System in Philadelphia, Blue Cross / Blue Shield of Minneapolis, and Extendicare in Milwaukee.

Karen Kirby, RN, MSN, Principal.

Ms. Kirby has over thirty years of diverse healthcare administration and consulting experience, nationally and internationally. She was previously the Senior Vice President for Patient Services at Boston University Medical Center, and Associate Director of Nursing at the University of California, San Francisco. In 1990, she entered the international healthcare arena as the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer at Healthcare International, LTD, an international tertiary care hospital and hotel complex near Glasgow, Scotland. In 1995, she joined Harvard Medical International as a Senior Consultant and Director, where she provided consulting services in India, Abu Dhabi, Spain and various other international locations.

In addition to working with Brightworks, Ms. Kirby assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer at Kirby/Bates in 2003 with the goal of combining her experience and expertise in nursing and hospital administration with that in healthcare consulting, and ultimately shape exceptional nursing leadership teams and improve patient care.

Joan M. Moyer, CPA, Principal.

Ms. Moyer has more than 20 years of healthcare accounting experience. She specializes in billing, reimbursement, and financial management in acute and ambulatory settings. She has extensive experience assisting clients in assessing the financial viability of clinical service line development and expansion, restructuring inpatient accounting departments and evaluating billing and collection arrangements and opportunities. She is also highly skilled in developing business plans and budgets for a broad range of healthcare clients.

Prior to joining Brightworks, Ms. Moyer served as the Vice President of Finance for the MEDIQ Consulting Group. She also spent time working as a supervisor in large accounting firm and as an accountant in a community hospital. Ms. Moyer is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in Pennsylvania. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from Pennsylvania State University.

Paul Musgrave, MBA, Principal.

Mr. Musgrave has over 25 years of experience in the design, development, and management of purchasing processes, supply chain processes, system integration, and organization development for a variety of large healthcare providers and manufacturers. His areas of consulting expertise include strategic sourcing, strategic planning, and process re-engineering. Mr. Musgrave specializes in the rapid analysis of a company’s supply chain and purchasing processes and the delivery of substantial cost savings associated with implementing aggressive but realistic performance improvement action plans. His healthcare clients have included Temple University Hospital, Ochsner Clinic, Ministry Healthcare, Aetna, VHA, and Baxter Healthcare.

Prior to joining Brightworks, Mr. Musgrave served as a Senior Manager at Deloitte Consulting and was responsible for helping lead Deloitte’s Healthcare Provider Supply Chain practice. Mr. Musgrave’s publications include: “Avoiding Scope Creep in Large System Projects” (National Association of Purchasing Managers Magazine), and “Strategy and Planning for Healthcare Materials Management” (Healthcare Materials Management Magazine). He has a Masters and Bachelors Degree in Business Administration and from Indiana State University.

Daniel C. Riina, FACHE, Principal.

Mr. Daniel Riina is an accomplished executive with more than 25 years of consulting and operational management experience in the healthcare industry. During his tenure as a national practice leader within ACS Healthcare Solutions (formerly Superior Consultant Company, Inc. and Chi Systems, Inc.), Mr. Riina successfully directed numerous consulting engagements for regional delivery systems, academic medical centers, community and specialty hospitals and niche providers. His primary areas of responsibility included strategy formulation, financial turnarounds, operations redesign, market and financial feasibility assessments, program expansion and business plan development. His direct operational experience in hospitals includes over a decade of responsibility in senior administrative positions.

Mr. Riina received his Masters in Hospital Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA and his Bachelors in Science from the College of William and Mary. He is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and a member of the Society of Healthcare Strategy and Market Development, and the Michigan Healthcare Executive Group and Associates.

Sharon Wickes, CPA, Principal.

Ms. Wickes has more than 20 years of health care finance and accounting experience, focused particularly on the acute- and post-acute health care industries. Ms. Wickes’ consulting expertise includes financial operations improvement through cost reduction, infrastructure redesign, and organizational restructuring. She is also highly skilled in project management, applying her abilities in various high-level interim management positions, including CFO of St. Francis Health System of Pittsburgh, PA. In addition, she has significant experience assisting hospitals and health systems in the areas of financial analysis and reporting, budgeting, strategic planning and financial information systems planning and implementation.

Previously, Ms. Wickes served as Director of Finance for Catholic Health System. She also spent several years as an auditor and financial consultant for a large accounting firm. She graduated from State University of New York with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and is affiliated with several professional societies, including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
